Bedford Indiana April a brutal assault targeted Al ber Fields mayor of Hedford at the city hall. Two men alleged to run a blind tiger attacked during a meeting, slashing the mayor’s throat with a knife and injuring his arm. Witnesses and a physician attended Fields as officials chased the assailant.
A 60 foot piling supply arrived at the Knox county side of the White River bridge and work restarted. The pile driver from the Blue Hole trestle is now on the old river bridge side, and with two drivers active, it will be several days before the 600 foot trestle is completed. Rescue divers at Blue Hole continue to search for the four men who drowned, but recovery prospects are slim and the railroad has paused further efforts. The telegraph station near Blue Hole has been relocated west of the river to ensure continued service.
The board of county commissioners awarded the contract for the Herron street improvement to Elkanah Alley for 2088 dollars. One other bid was 2090 dollars from Andrew Relater. The project runs from East Third and Herron, east on Herron to Bedford road, to East Ninth, then south to the graveled street.
Local business leaders pressed county commissioners to back a White River bridge linking Daviess and Knox counties near Camp Manning. They favored Camp Manning as the better site due to river shifts that could require two bridges at Marysville. If Knox County rejects the Elnora bridge, the Daviess County board will seek a conference to advance the Camp Manning project.

Mrs E Baker and her father William Layman of Elnora Indiana returned from Indianapolis after a searching trip for Roy E Baker who disappeared Tuesday and wrote a letter that she would find his body in White River at Indianapolis. Relatives doubt he acted alone, noting he had failed in a local manufacturing business. The article also references a Washington discussion about a similar case and a quotation from Congressman Richard Pedersen about a Cotton Belt encounter and a boy’s remark to his father after a fight with Jimmy Beatty.
Terre Haute reports Walter Worth, a Linton saloon keeper allied with Frank Fox, was arrested on Foxs charge of a conspiracy that allegedly swindled Fox out of 20000 in a crooked gambling game at Hot Springs Arkansas. Worth accompanied Fox during the game and later sought arrests of the alleged crooks, but could not be produced before the grand jury. A few weeks earlier he was alleged to have shot at a man named John.
The county board in session at the courthouse reviews flood damage reports from road superintendents. Bridges across the Edwards and Palmer roads were washed out or damaged, with two Palmer bridges listed at seventy four and sixty four feet. Eighty rods of gravel washed from the new Palmer road bed. Some sections washed away where current was strong. More reports are awaited to estimate repair costs and effort required.
Sheriff Harmon and Deputy Sheriffs McCafferty arrest three men on grand jury indictments. Joe Marahall of Odon faces disturbing a religious meeting, Taylor Hoffer of Washington for failure to pay dog tax, and John A. Sims formerly of Odon for assault and battery. Each posted a $100 bond for the next term of the Daviess circuit court.
Knights of Pythias to meet at the Koof P hall with supper to attract attendance. A pie filled evening follows the gathering, featuring an eating contest to crown the top eater among Lance Wise James A Colbert and others while James A Colbert acts as toastmaster and timekeeper.
April 5 Ind Hamer DS Matelnges principal of Mat sinkes Device Manufacturing Co badly injured when his auto driven north collided with a crossing car on South Ninth. He was thrown from the car unconscious with head gashes and possible internal injuries. Motsinger, a Purdue graduate, moved from Pendleton to Lafayette recently. Formerly lived at Shoals. Town road election in Madison township Pike county ends in victory for roads advocates with four miles of road costing 1615,000. Farmers traveled part of the way by boat.
A drunken dispute over 25 cents near Vincennes Central Foundry led to a knife attack in which Coleman allegedly struck his opponent. The other man suffered severed intestines and is hospitalized in serious condition. Witnesses described a confrontation outside the yard with Coleman reported ready to defend himself.
Thomas Cochran an eighty five year old farmer of Barr township died after a long illness on Saturday. He lived on the farm where he died for several years and was among the oldest respected farmers. He came to Indiana from Ohio with his family after their father’s death and raised eight children eight still living. Survivors include Agnes Donnelly Harris township John Cochran Indianans Frank Cochran Washington Zytate Thomas Cochran Washington and Mollie and William at home. A brother Timothy Cochran lived in New York City. The body was buried from St. Peter's church at Montgomery. Abner Bowman, a well known Barr township farmer, died Monday afternoon after a long illness. He was born April 6, 1845 and spent his life in Barr township. He married Caroline Bracton November Aae and had six children Nelle Bowman Mrs Ella Diekerken Mel fdy Bennett of Montgomery Mrs Ada Allen Burns City Mrs Florence McGowen and Mrs Edith Levner West Terre Haute. One sister Mrs Jane Wordling of Washington township survives him. He was a member of the Christian church and identified with the Republican party.
Vincennes Indiana April 8 A local claim ties recent floods to divine wrath. Co Robert W Potts of Oklahoma told a select audience that the good Lord sent the flood just as he destroyed biblical cities. The remark suggests a religious explanation for the disaster.
