Evansville downtown district under floodwater as Illinois City evacuation expands to 10 safer locations. Rescue teams locate a victim’s hat near the Shawneetown trestle while remaining structures are reduced to few buildings.
A late April dispatch reports Cairo awaiting the crest of the flood, with Evansville and Terre Haute hit hard as surrounding towns struggle. Shawneetown and nearby areas face near-total destruction, while relief trains and shipments from Chicago, St Louis, and Evansville mobilize food, clothing, and medical supplies for Dayton Logansport and other affected locales. The Ohio and Mississippi rivers threaten higher levels, and officials appeal for $75,000 to aid Tornado and flood victims in Terre Haute.
The B and O Southwestern train men stranded ten days thank Washington citizens for kindness and generosity. The statement is signed by H S McMahan and multiple colleagues, praising the warm treatment and expressing appreciation. Dated April 3, 1912, from Washington Indiana.

In Vincennes, Miss Hatherine Bierhaus daughter of John Bierhaus announced at her home engagement to Mr. Asa Radspinner of Cincinnati. The couple plans marriage in the fall. Radspinner, formerly of Washington, works for the B and C Southwestern Railroad in Cincinnati.
Indiana University opened with students returning from spring break delayed by washouts on rails. Registration was postponed to today and a few students remained on site. Trains operated by Monon and Illinois Central connect Indianapolis to Bloomington, with a Bedford train arriving as the first southbound service yesterday.
White River continues to drop with reports of five inches down Wednesday night and about ten inches by 1 am at the pumping station, falling about one inch per hour. Rain today unlikely to affect the river unless it spreads northward across southern Indiana. Vincennes reports steady rain while the Wabash river remains on a downtrend.
The French government gave military honors as the body of J. Purpont Morgan was transferred at Haute from a vessel to a steamer bound for New York. He died in Rome and the ship sails Saturday. A Texas pastor who demanded women remove Easter bats faced sharp church criticism. Pittsburgh Dispatch.
Vincennes Indiana April 3 a large pile driver from the C B and Q railroad passed through this morning en route to Wheatland where it will be used to rebuild a bridge across White River replacing the old B O Southwestern bridge washed away by the flood
Searchers recovered a hat floating in driftwood along the river, believed to belong to Daniel L Shaffer yardmaster of engine 401. Recovery teams, hampered by rising waters, have not located Shaffer or the other four missing men, and bridge repairs delay work at the site.
U S Express agent S H Burton reports a deal with American Express to handle express shipments along the Terre Haute to Elnora line. The change enables faster service from Indianapolis and Terre Haute, with Alva Faith to run local lines at Elnora and a sworn messenger to operate the Elnora Washington route, aiming to ease shipment delays for Washington and other customers.
Two daily trains from the B and O reach Elnora to connect with Southern Indiana for Terre Haute and Indianapolis. The 6 am service returns with mail cars and two bags of mail, reuniting mail consignments to eastern points. A baggage car completes the consist as the service plans a late afternoon return.
Stranded passengers at hotels after a week were released by the B and O S W railroad with expenses covered. Northward travel opened with two C E I trains to Elnora, via Terre Haute and Indianapolis. Most accepted reimbursement, a few pursued legal counsel, while many praised the company for aiding their welfare. Telegraph and phone links now enable funds to be sent to those still stranded.
