In early New Orleans, wealthy planter Fontain deposits large sums and avoids guards, confident in fortune. When rumors of bank suspension surface, he anticipates a loss but the bank halts him at half past three, paying his funds. He fears danger and remains in the city as night brings uneasy dreams.
In a rickety tower district building at night, six to eight conspirators plot to steal Fontain’s fifty thousand by luring him from his hotel. A humane member objects, fearing harm to Fontain’s daughter, while plans proceed to detain him tomorrow or next night. Frank Gordon, listening nearby, escapes with crucial details and enters a feverish, unsettled morning.
Frank Gordon and Eleanor Fontain, engaged in a secret betrothal, face a brutal obstacle as Eleanor’s father opposes their match due to class and racial fears. Eleanor vows fidelity and plans secrecy while Frank wrestles despair over potential separation and social ruin. The lovers resolve to endure, trusting in God as they await what comes next.
