Miss Ray Blackwell is found dead in bed with a bullet hole in her head in Phillipsburg. Police investigate the bedroom death as a possible homicide and call for witnesses and evidence from local residents.
The coroner reports the fatal shooting of Mrs. Ray Blackwell at 687 Washington Street Phillipsburg last Thursday night. Intimate companion Samuel Carpenter of Easton was arrested Friday on murder charges after admitting prior acquaintance and jealousy toward Mrs Blackwell. Police found a revolver near her body and evidence indicated a rapid progression from dinner to tragedy within a single evening.
Samuel Carpenter, accused of Mrs Blackwell's murder, attempted to cut his throat in the Easton jail during religious services. He survived after 28 stitches, with warden and doctors rushing to treat him as Morgan and another prisoner aided. A letter found suggests planned self harm and ties to Mrs Blackwell.
The court delayed sentencing of George Andrews for murder amid doubt over Governor issued warrant. Prosecution argues sentence should stand. abeyance to continue as judges consider the New York Ruth case precedent. Also reported are robberies and arrests of Voorhees men, and Odd Fellows anniversary services with sermons and floral decor.
