Case of Vannatta vs Board of Fire Trustees

The New Jersey Supreme Court in Trenton heard an appeal on a mandamus to compel discharge of Edward Vannatta onto the Washington Firemen’s relief roll. Attorneys argued he was an exempt fireman in indigent circumstances, while the trustees denied relief and the court indicated the writ should be denied as discretionary. Justice Gummere paused further prompts and allowed further briefs, noting the writ’s scope ends with the trustees’ discretion.
