Rev George L. B. Harrington of Oxford reportedly suffered a deteriorating mind amid debt and isolation. He vanished from the parsonage with his bride and was later found dead in the church bell tower, with his widow devastated and planning funeral arrangements in Delaware. The incident sparked reports across New York papers, though details remained contested.
A destructive storm system lashed Warren County and adjoining counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey last Wednesday. John Wesley Pitts a prominent Washington merchant and longtime public figure died at his home on West Church Street last Friday morning at 6 o'clock aged 68. He had been an invalid for months and underwent several operations in New York and at home. The immediate cause was failure of the ureter. Pitts was a 12 year president of the local water company and a trusted civic leader. He was born near Broad Castle on March 18, 1819, and left a large family of siblings and a widow Miss Fannie W. Wyckall survives him. The funeral was held at his home with Masonic honors and interment in Washington cemetery.
