Dr Smite chosen mayor of Washington in a tight election race. M K Raub and D Spangenberg secure council seats amid post vote celebrations. Local officials outlined new policy aims and future development plans for the city.
Municipal elections in our county produced mixed results with Beavers as collector and Aneese Strutt winning mayor. Voters saw Democratic majorities and a large appropriation pass for town hall and a fire engine, amid a tight county contest and diverse council slates.
A historic extreme storm tore through Washington Tuesday afternoon with lightning, hail, and two hours of wind and rain. Severe flooding filled cellars, stranded streets, and damaged mills, bridges, and homes along Washington avenue, Revard Street, and Port Colden corridors. residents and officials reported extensive property losses, with makers of local industry suffering shattered structures and washed-out foundations.
Dr Charles S Smith son of Alfred G Smith of Agby was born August 23 1869 in Nantendon county. He studied medicine at Bullimore Maryland and earned honors before returning to Washington Avenue where he built a successful practice. He served as mayor pro tem and held trustee roles at the Presbyterian church, shaping local civic life.
The Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church held its twenty-fifth annual meeting at Tottenville, Totten ville, 8.1, closing Tuesday after a week. Delegates and applicants for admission were housed in Tottenville with 300 plus clergy in attendance. Reports showed membership growth, benevolent contributions rising, and a large purse for the Centenary Insurance Association. officers were elected, and committees formed to recruit more members.
