College football notes from Harvard Yale Princeton time
A rapid survey of the forthcoming season mentions Cartwright of Hawaii as a candidate for substitute center at Old EH. Pennsylvania’s team averaged 172 pounds last year and under 173 this year. Roraback from Yale will stay at his old center position. Exeter’s promising squad has notable prospects, while Murphy of Brown commands a large group of candidates. Dartmouth returns seventeen from last season. many strong players remain though key losses were suffered. Harvard is pleased with early practice but must find a center and quarterback. Yale and Princeton open their seasons midweek, Harvard on Saturday. Princeton vs Dickinson, Yale vs Weseyan. The new umpire’s horn is noted for its distinct sound. Matthews, Harvard’s Negro baseball shortstop, won’t join the football squad due to law studies. Michigan projects 200-pound players and speed, a novelty for the gridiron. Some players begin to discontinue headgear use. Maryland Agricultural College limits gear to nose guard for one back. Penn will require thirty-five minute halves in Harvard games. Ely, Yale’s former quarterback, now coaches at Williams after breaking two ribs in a classic New Haven tackle. Halph Kinney, Yale tackle, weighs 225 pounds and may no longer fit tackle duties. Plans shift Hogan and Bloomer to tackles with Shiftinney at left guard. Tripp of the University of Chicago will finish studies at Yale but cannot play center, trailing in science school work.
