Ludendorff admits August disaster ends hopes to avert defeat

In a July 18 1918 confession Ludendorff calls the August disaster the worst experience save the final breaking up of the Quadruple Alliance. He notes officers and troops surrendered to single troopers or isolated squadrons as Allied pressure grew. He recounts three failed drives and the Marne pocket as strategic traps. He acknowledges six days warning before Americans struck below Soissons and praises Foch’s handling while lamenting German losses.

August 8 1918 marked German retreat on Lys Amiens front

General Ludendorff recalls August 8 as the black day of the German army as Allied pressure near Amiens forced a defensive withdrawal. Second and Eighteenth armies fell back from Albert to Roye with heavy losses, tanks and Australian American units in action, while reserves and rearguards struggled to hold the line. The situation grew dire as the balance of power shifted with American reinforcements arriving.
