Haig Reports Mixed Front-Line Successes Across Europe

Field Marshal Haig states British forces carried out successful minor operations overnight at several points. British troops seized three German strongpoints near the Henseyong road, taking 60 prisoners, and repelled a German counterattack near Gilmax farm. Night progress included gains near Tombois farm and trenches northwest of Vendhuile with additional prisoners. British Forces Capture 25 000 Turks in Palestine Drive

London Sept 23 Associated Press reports Gen Allenby’s forces have captured 25 000 Turkish prisoners and 260 guns as they push northward in Palestine. The Seventh and Eighth Turkish armies are largely eliminated, with transport seized and Jordan crossings at Jisr ed-Dameer cut off escape routes. The resulting roundup contains many killed and wounded, with Turks left scattered in the mountains.

Italian Front Growing Active On Piave Front

Rome reports intense artillery fighting along the Piave with scattered bombardments elsewhere on the Italian front. French troops penetrated Austrian lines east of Bisemol, destroying defenses, taking heavy losses, and returning more than 100 prisoners. British patrols recovered prisoners north of Asiago. An enemy outpost was driven back in the Ledro valley.

Americans Raid Haumont Area Front Lines in France

American troops raided enemy trenches near Haumont village and captured 25 prisoners. In Haumont itself a unit took 20 more prisoners with heavy fighting and German casualties. Prisoners included Jaeger battalion members formerly at Metz. Other patrols found German trenches and a machine gun site south of Dommartin in the Krieghling line as fighting continued along the front. Berlin said an American attack between Haumont and Rembercourt was repulsed after advances toward Haumont Dampvoux and Rembercourt. German troops expanded positions west of the Moselle. A German army order seized by allies complains of prisoner watch theft and threatens harsh punishment for such acts.

British Flyers Bomb Metz and Surrounding Furnaces

British independent air force dropped nearly 16 tons of bombs on Metz region tail dromes and blast furnaces at Hagendingen and Rotbach. Five enemy airdromes were attacked. The Alsace Lorraine governor visited Metz to inspect damage and aid hospital patients, while dispatches noted no bombardment of Meix despite fort bombardments nearby.
