Threat of Open Shop Ultimatum Raises District Shoes Fees

District officials approved an ultimatum by Major Simms directing the fire department to authorize horseshoeing at shops willing to work at prevailing market prices rather than pay the union set 2 per set. Master horseshoers claim prices rose citywide and warn of a strike, with potential use of non union shops. The dispute cites higher wages, coal costs, and nails while urging fire department to source shops at reasonable prices. The first union meeting is set for October 4.
