Christian Church History and Restoration Movement Origins
Reader notes a September 18 Post article on the Disciples and Power case, and argues for recognition of Barton W Stone's Kentucky revival. It recounts three early founders groups from 1793 to 1800s, citing Caneridge as birthplace, a centennial visit by 5000, and the Stone monument with Gano’s evergreen tree nearby.
Monument to Bartow W Stone Remains in Kentucky Tribute
Born December 4 172 Died November 9 1644 his Remains Lie Here The Church of Christ at Canetridge and other generous friends in Kentucky have caused this monument to be erected as a tribute to Bartoh W Stone animeter of the gospel of Christ and the great reformer of the nineteenthcentury This inscription was read by many eyes and copied by many hands the day of the centennial celebration and numerous sprigs of cane were cut and carried away as M mementoes of the occasion. There were two sets of addresses one by J B. Baines and the other by B A Jenkins and several short talks It is said that the Disciples and Christians united in 1832 and a convention in 1909 in Pittsburg will celebrate the centennial at the proclamation of the celebrated Declaration and Address by Thomas Campbell in 1809 which marks the rise of the eastern branch of the reformatory organization At that time Mr Campbell knew that state perhaps nothing of the western branch and neither of these documents can be regarded as the product of the other There were minor differences but the friends of both saw no insuperable obstacle to union They went to work to accomplish that end They believed union would be possible, and John Rodgers of the Christians and John Smith of the Disciples traveled to urge the cause and most churches joined The two bodies thus pursued a practical example of union There were theoretical differences about the divinity of Christ settled by agreeing to preach only what the Scriptures say and leave philosophy aside The self-denying men who promoted this movement were worthy of imitation Mrs Mattie Gano Stone Kunz.
