Liberal split across provinces as Conservatives win seven cabinet positions and seek solid Dominion unity. Ontario backs the empire policy while Quebec favors Liberals but Western provinces tilt away. Sir Wilfrid Laurier plans retirement. Robert Borden poised as premier with a working majority independent of French nationalists.
The Laurier government and reciprocity suffered a crushing defeat in the Canadian elections. Conservatives won a majority of more than forty, seven cabinet ministers were defeated, and Ontario voted almost unanimously against the administration. Robert L Berdlen tipped to become prime minister as Conservatives push trade expansion within the empire. Laurier’s retirement looms amid the sweeping defeat.
President Taft expresses disappointment that Canada voted against reciprocity, stating it would have benefited both nations and strengthened US Britain relations. He notes Canada’s choice reflects a policy of independent tariff control and national development, not hostility toward the United States.

The National Funeral Directors Association debated a proposed national law to ban sea burials. Resolutions were introduced at their convention in Atlantic City on September 21 supporting the principle but no final action was taken. Six delegates favored the measure while others remained undecided.

Nine other members were released after spending the night in cells.
A Danish airman writes of preparing a Copenhagen to New York flight next spring using a US made bi plane with landings on steamer stations across the North Sea and Atlantic. Steamers will host wireless power to supplement gasoline enabling long continuous flights. He will coordinate auxilary ships by wireless telegraphy for emergencies. Starting date not set. Grafton WV votes $80 000 bonds to improve water system at a special election with turnout details noted.
