Garfield era pastor recalls three decades at Vermont Avenue Church
Rev. Frederick W. Power marked his thirtieth anniversary amid rain and praise. He recalls founding missions on Bladensburg Road, the Maryland Delware and DC work, the Bethany Beach Institution, and the 1880 effort to build the church, noting President Garfield’s personal ties and influence. Garfield loved the church and shared grief when his child died, reflecting a long, storied ministry.

Founding and growth of a Washington church over three decades
In a reflective anniversary address Dr Power surveys 30 years of a Fremont Avenue church, tracing its origins from 1812 dispersal by Thomas Campbell to a modern multi chapel network. He notes Garfield's era, the 1875 pastorate, and rapid expansion through Ninth Street and onward, with eight churches and 2,400 members by 1900. The sermon ends: “This is a fragment, hitherto the Lord hath helped us,” urging continued faith and progress.
