Perkins Defended Campaign Use of Insurance Money

George W Perkins of New York Life testified before the Armstrong insurance committee that the company contributed to Republican campaigns in three consecutive elections. He detailed checks and transfers, including a $10,000 payment to A L Bliss for the 1900 campaign, and noted similar arrangements with McKinley campaigns. He defended the practice as acceptable after deliberation, though he said he could not confirm all prior years’ purposes. The testimony covered joint transactions with J P Morgan & Co and questioned whether actions aimed to keep bonds off official reports.
