Remodel of St John’s Church Faces Major Debate
In Washington sixteenth and Ho street northwest, St John’s Episcopal Church undergoes its greatest physical change in 103 years. Plans by Mead & White include external stucco, altered entrances, reorganized interior, marble columns, and a modern electric lighting plant. The alterations follow the bequest of Mrs Payne and reflect a balance between preservation and modernization as the parish marks its long history since 1848.
