Road linked with history Natchez Trace origin

This passage from Everybody's Magazine chronicles the Natchez Trace as one of America's oldest roads. It traces its wartime origin under Washington's orders, a route from Nashville to Natchez and New Orleans, its role for merchants and Methodists, and its enduring place as a central Southwest thoroughfare despite railroads and shifting settlement patterns. The piece highlights explorers, military figures, and the road’s lasting presence on the ridges even as new paths emerged.
