Special to The Washington Fast reports Sylvester Cannon, foreman of a sewer gang under Forty-second Street to the East River, heroically saving twelve laborers during a blast and gas incident. A 112-vessel force with 19,680 sailors, including four warships and four torpedo flotillas, stretched two miles off shore. The Holswollern flagship led the review as mayhem of salute and cheers echoed across the fleet.
Vienna Sept 4 special cable reports Emperor Francis Joseph has named Lieut Baron Prucuschen as Austria’s first permanent naval attaché in Washington. Recognition of American navy power follows ties with the United States and the growing strategic role of U S maritime forces.
About 1 000 people crowded the Elin Theater when a film fire broke out near the entrance causing a stampede. Fire alarms, cries of hot and wary, and a stage singalong failed to calm the crowd as women fainted and exits overwhelmed. Most evacuated before the blaze was extinguished and the show resumed later.
Niagara Falls New York September reports night spectacle turning lights on the falls for a month or more. John J Maloney of Boston was tossed into the sea two miles off Fishermen Beach Swampscott during a night ascent. Enveloped by dense fog and a cold current the balloon collapsed early causing a rapid fall into the water where he clung to the largely inflated balloon until life savers reached him. He was rescued by fishermen from Nahant and Swampscott after an hour adrift, and restored with recoveries upon shore.

George Walker aged thirty three of Hackettstown New Jersey sought work in the North and climbed into a freight car at Hackettstown. He was found in East Twenty second street by Detective William Kenny of the New Jersey Central Railroad starved and with a broken leg under a fallen box. He was removed to the city hospital and is expected to recover. The car was bound for Boston and would have arrived only after several days.
