Five year old Herbert Soter die in Newport News auto crash

Special to The Warning From Newport News Virginia August five year old Herbert Soter was fatally injured by a car driven by M M Phippson on Hluchington avenue near thirty seventh. He died at St Francis Hospital minutes later. Phipps, a contractor’s nephew, was arrested on manslaughter charges with bail set at 1000 for appearance tomorrow in police court. Mrs D S Phipps and two daughters were in the car. Phipps claimed the child ran into the street making it impossible to stop.

District infantry wins skirmish in hard district match

Camp Perry Ohio Aug 1 First Lieut Harryn Caliwell DC National Guard placed ninth among 100. Marine Corps officers dominated the National Rifle Association cup event with Caldwell leading at 310 and Caldwell finishing with 187 in the cup. District scores feature many named officers and sailors, with Lieut Charles T Putnam 19th and Tachard Powers 24th among district leaders. The district team of sixteen was defeated by the US Infantry in the Etane skirmish match. Capt Dennison was mortally wounded and later recovered.
