Quebec Church and reciprocity stir Canada’s unity crisis
A Quebec religious-political argument argues that French Canada fears U S governance and privileges under church rule. A Liberal warns that tariff imperialism opposes reciprocity, warning trade unity with America may lead to national amalgamation.

Weights and Measures Sealer Urges Public Weight Inspections
The sealer of weights and measures W C Haskell presented his annual report to the city commissioners. He notes the office’s receipts exceeded expenses by 1180 70 but would have been 950 higher without reduced inspection fees. He urges bill changes to curb underweight flour and recommends shifting flour inspection to the district commissioners and an independent inspector to test all packages. Coal weighing for city delivery is praised, with reports of carts delivering more coal than tickets show, underscoring the need for inspection.

Superintendent of Insurance Thomas B. Drake asked Commissioner Macfarlane for an increased appropriation from 9277.15 to 13413.38 mainly for salaries and office equipment and for his own salary rise to 3500. He seeks a new clerk at 900 and 1000 for appraisers plus 300 for travel and funds for blanks reports and furniture. The bathing beach season ended with about 45000 bathers.
