The passage recalls Sitting Bull as a complex figure tied to both Indian patriotism and prophecy. Though denounced by some as cowardly, he showed courage in hatred of whites and breaking the peace pipe. Gen Miles called his fate tragic. Since Pontiac to Red Jacket, no Indian attracted such wide support to confront white civilization. The body was buried on Standing Rock, and weeks later host dancers’ campaign ended at Wounded Knee.
