Roads Hold Back Orders Heavy Contracts for Steel Work

New York, Oct. 22. Transportation companies gave little support to steel mills last week. Railroad orders for steel products were the smallest in memory while rail revenues were very high. Steel firms expect larger orders after the November election and after freight rate settlements. Only small mandatory railroad orders for the rest of the month are anticipated. Missouri Pacific ordered machine tools. Building activity is over, keeping structural contracts light. Orders announced: about 10 000 tons rails, 18 000 tons exported to Australia and the Sandwich Islands, 16 000 tons fabricated material for buildings and bridges. East pig iron activity rose with about 60 000 tons contracted, plus 25 000 tons pending. West contracts total about 25 000 tons. Steel works in East and West bought 10 000 tons basic and 300 tons ferro manganese.
