Struggle for Maryland Leadership in Poe Amendment Clash
Baltimore dispatch analyzes the Maryland campaign over the Poe amendment limiting black voting rights. It notes friction within the Democratic party led by Arthur Poe Gorman, alienation with Isidor Rayner, and opposition by Gov Warfield and Attorney General Bryan.
Poe amendment feared to threaten voting rights in Maryland
The piece argues that the Poe amendment would centralize power with registration officers and allow partisan control of who may be registered, potentially excluding naturalized voters. It discusses Governor Warfield and Senator Gorman, cites the state’s registration figures, and notes expectations for a 20,000 plurality for Gorman if Republicans defect. Author J. J. Dickinson signs off.
