Tug Katherine Moran Sails Near Perilous Magellan Route
The tug Katherine Moran sails from New York today for Panama by way of the Strait of Magellan. The Canal Commission bought her for $58,000 and sent her around South America at own risk without insurance. The vessel is described as 9% feet long with a 2 feet breadth and a 13 feet draft. A Barbadian wireless report yesterday noted the deep sea dredge Culetta arrived safely at Barbados after weathered storms. Capt Helricksen reported heavy seas but no damage. The Calenca departed Hampton Roads in October and is averaging over nine knots, aiming to freeze the canal prism through Panama as does her sister ship in the Bay of Colon.
