Reports from Jamestown and nearby ports describe the disaster of the Cyprus, a newly launched lake steamer, far out in Lake Superior. First Mate W D Watson rowed the Mariposa eighty seven miles to Monterey after the ship ran out of fuel eighty seven miles off the coast from Monterey. The tug Marshall set to tow the steamer to San Francisco while sixty eight crew and fifty passengers remained aboard.
