Woodward and Lothrop The Boston Store’s Rise in DC

The Woodward and Lothrop firm, long established in Boston suburbs, built a Washington DC retail power. From a Chelses start in 1869 to 705 Market Street, the pair expanded to occupy the entire block bounded by Tenth to Eleventh and F to G streets, with a modern eight story fireproof building on Thirteenth and F. The partners, W Woodward and Lothrop, born in Maine and Massachusetts, built a store famed for quality stock from New York and Paris, extensive continental connections, and constant customer focus. Their removal from the Penn Avenue trade district proved wise as DC’s retail center shifted to F Street, cementing their place as a leading Capital City department store.

Washington Post's 32 Years Grow With City Merchants

The piece traces The Post's early Washington patrons in 1877 and the city's retail boom. Lansburgh & Bro and Saks & Co grow from small rooms to major establishments as Washington transforms from a wartime market to a modern commercial hub. It highlights Galt jewelers, May hardware, Browning grocery, and Saks banking ties, noting long-running family firms and urban expansion.
