President Roosevelt endorses plans for a channel from the Mississippi to the Gulf. At New Madrid he tells governors and officials the project seeks a long waterway while a riverfront pageant in Cairo honors the President with a parade and speeches.
Vienna October 3. Tenor Caruso received scant applause as he sang at the Hoyat Opera in Budapest last night. He learned that many boxes were empty due to high prices and the scheduled Countess Vasquez could not appear. He urged postponement or substitution but management refused. Caruso then performed two acts with little acclaim before retiring to tears, saying he never faced such treatment.
In Lida thirty miles south of Griddeld four men were wounded in a shooting affray at the Mohawk saloon. Billy Lemon Jim Hibbs and Shorty played cards when Harry Wiseman opened fire. Hibbs was shot in the cheek and stomach Wright suffered a groin wound and Shorty a leg wound. Wiseman was shot through the mouth. The injured were rushed to a Goldfeld automobile for treatment. three are feared fatally wounded.
A noon skirmish at Los Indios near Ma art pits rurales led by Lieut. Martine against bandits under Cachero. Rurales kill one bandit named Manuel Galaro, wound and capture Manuel Garrido Sonia, seize arms, and gain no reported losses. Santa Ana is captured but released after refusing to join. Reports say seven bandits engaged. some claim larger numbers. Conservative La Discusion accuses Gen Pina Guerra of supplying government with conspiracy info. Ducasse's lawyers file habeas corpus as decision nears. La Discusion devotes pages to Ducasse having no plot connection.
Probate reveals D Willis James bequeaths about 1.6 million split into 31 0000 shares to Union Theological Seminary Columbia Yale Amherst Cooper Union the Children’s Aid Society of New York the American Board of Foreign Missions Hampton Institutes Johns Cathedral of New York and Presbyterian Hospital. The remainder goes to his widow and his son Arthur Curtis James.
George Lee Peabody of Boston filed for divorce from Elizabeth Crowninshield Peabody, alleging desertion. He says she left him in September 1901 and is involved in athletic pastimes. Peabody, a banker with Lee Higginson & Co, is in London and will remain abroad for months. He lists memberships in several clubs and Harvard education.
A Kentucky feudist on trial for the murder of Sam J Brooks, a Black man, testified under cross examination that he has shot and probably killed fourteen men in his time. He said most killings occurred in the Kentucky mountains during a labor strike era.
San Francisco reports 51 verified bubonic plague cases to date with 30 deaths and about 30 suspects under observation. Nurse Mins Kelling at City and County Hospital has recovered. The Marine Hospital Service tracks eradication efforts led by Dr Blue.
Two New York City girls Rose Miller and Stella Bonesh aged seventeen and eighteen flee urban drudgery by living in a thicket near Flushing Bay East Elmhurst. Detected by Astoria detectives, they admit stealing bread milk and meat from doorstep camps during two months of self sufficient living. Magistrate Smith sentences them to thirty days each in Queens County jail.
The Court of Appeals holds the state senate was legally elected under a prior apportionment despite doubts about district lines. The decision says there could be no vacancy in any district g opened by the governor, and the assembly’s ouster of a member was improper. The ruling upholds the titles and seats of all senators as valid.
Special to The Washington Poet reports Louisville and Nashville executive Milton H Smith attacking Gov Comer over railroad policy. Smith accuses Comer of pressuring legislature and claims Comer’s fortune, including a 33000 acre farm, is swollen as he extends critique to property rights and rail interests.
During a Parker 9 Academy centennial homecoming in New Richmond Ohio Lieut Gen Henry Corbina urged restraint on federal power. He argued that centralized government weakens the people and that Americans are capable of managing their own affairs without Washington stimulus.
In Hartington Iowa investigators say Mrs John Hathaway’s claim that a tramp burned her son alive after she refused food is untrue. Officials believe the boy started the fire himself while playing with matches during his mother's absence. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
Austin A. Higbee of Coloma Michigan drifted for four days in a 28 foot sailboat after losing the centerboard near the entrance to the river. He was rescued about two miles from shore by someone after drifting across the lake with only a few raw potatoes for sustenance.
Neatly dressed young woman about 25 was found floating in the river in front of the city. No evidence of violence or identification. the body had been in the water for several hours and appears to be from a well-to-do background.
Secretary Taft and party departed Yokohama for Manila aboard the Minnesota after a Kobe stop. General Kurola hosted a luncheon in Kobe with Gen Bowers and others aboard, Taft appearing fatigued but cheerful. The party was welcomed by Kobe officials and US consular staff, with decorations and a formal farewell at the pier.

A head end crash between a passenger and freight train on the Wabash line near Neely today left both engines demolished. General Manager Miller said no serious injuries occurred, eight people received bruises and cuts, the wreck blamed on freight crew disobedience of orders.

Raportello a 20 year old former Brooklyn resident now in Norfolk shoots and kills a woman who then wounds him in a Fulton Street barber shop incident. The woman, later identified under Raportello’s name, held a child and sought his arrest for desertion but failed. Both died or remained gravely wounded as police investigate.
A saloon altercation ends with John J Ryan known promoter-turned-fighter and Daniel Murphy clashing. Ryan allegedly struck Murphy with a bottle, fracturing the skull. Murphy was carried home by friends. no arrest reported.
James Hensley of Indianapolis shot and killed Mary McClintock, age 18, after a quarrel at a farm five miles northeast of Noblesville. Hensley claims he shot the elder McClintock in self defense when attacked with a knife after the dispute. Hensley was arrested.
In New York County on October 3 the Parsons ticket was elected without opposition by the Republican county committee meeting tonight. Parsons was chosen president and pledged to actions on protection and financial trust, with emphasis on protecting interests of account holders and reform measures.
