Battle Won by Fear Fought 47 Years Ago Today
P. E. Cowan recalls a Civil War cavalry engagement near the Davis farm Virginia on October 1 1564. Union forces under Gen Davies repelled two Confederate flanking assaults after Lieut William Hughes led a daring charge that misled Gen Young about a fresh brigade. Casualties were light for the Union and heavier for the Confederates. Hughes and his men were praised for preventing a decisive flank move.
