No More Prison Stripes for New York First-Term Prisons
Albany Sept 0 This was the last day of prison stripes on clothing of first term prisoners confined to the four state prisons of New York. Tomorrow first term convicts will wear a new dress not suggestive of prison life. The change is part of a five year program by State Superintendent Collins to distinguish first term men from old offenders and improve conditions. Abolition of the jock step and cropped head accompanies the reform. Since these changes, punishments in all prisons have fallen over 40 percent. The new suits are dark gray cloth in a semi military style.
