Plans for vast sewer extensions in Washington outlines costs

Superintendent D E McComb submitted annual estimates to Engineer Commissioner Col Biddle detailing major sewer projects for the coming fiscal year. The largest item is 420,000 to extend the East Side intercepting sewer to Brookland, plus 296,100 for a Rock Creek side trunk sewer, plus 450,000 for Arizona Avenue system extension. Additional works include several valley and intercepting sewers with costs ranging from 28,800 to 310,0550 and a total push to complete the Arizona system and related branches. McComb also calls for bond reductions, extended spending authority, and operating funds of 25,000 for six months of 1905.

District Building Notes and Tax Exemption Question

Corporation Counsel Duvall issued an opinion to the Commissioners stating that furniture in lawyers and doctors libraries except book cases is taxable personal property. Engineer Col. Biddle directed that the Brightwood street car service not be corrected by the Commissioners, and the matter was sent to the railway company. Duvall noted Congress failed to pass a bill to fix conditions. The Commissioners cannot waive fire escape requirements for the Evans building at 10 New York Avenue, though extra time may be allowed, as the owner declined to erect escapes and the YMCA may vacate.
