Market held in check declines after the opening
New York stocks opened with wild, uncertain gains giving way to a broad decline as conservative investors restrained one sided advances. Industrials led gains early, many rail shares rose briefly, but profit taking and weaker demand trimmed the list. Russia fears and abroad weakness weighed, while banks and mortgage funds eyed year end and holiday effects on trading.
