Shopmen's Strike Averted With One Year Wage Scale
Chicago firms report the threatened strike by shop employees of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was averted as workers accepted the company's peace terms and signed a new wage schedule for a year. The dispute began five months earlier with six grievances, reduced to six points after conferences. One point called for a 9 cent an hour wage increase and changes in working conditions, which the railroad rejected as unaffordable amid weak business. Local unions appealed to international officials who came to Chicago, but negotiations failed and the unions accepted the railroad's terms in an ultimatum issued November 10.
