Washington Statue Critique Sparks Debate on Elevation and Merit
The director criticized the Farragut statue and others, opposing a closer view and urging increased elevation to favor aviators. He praised Greene and Scott monuments, mocked the Lincoln courthouse statue, and faulted sculpture competitions for producing weaker work, urging careful selection of talent for Washington memorials.
Proposed repositions for Jackson and Washington statues
Mary F Henderson of Washington argues in a letter that the Jackson monument and a Washington effigy in town should be replaced with statues worthy of their subject. She suggests moving Jackson to a premier site near the Capitol, and placing a smaller Washington statue near the White House, with emphasis on honoring generals and foreign volunteers who served the nation.
