Warship Rescue in English Channel Saves 80 From Burning Steamer

The British battleship Iron Duke rescued about 80 passengers and crew from the burning steamer Secotsdyke in the English Channel off the Isle of Wight. The vessel, en route from Mediterranean ports to Sunderland, caught fire shortly after midnight, destroying its bridge and several lifeboats while heavy seas prevented launching remaining boats. The Iron Duke, on night trials, dispatched boats to the scene as flames raged aboard. A second dispatch notes the Japanese steamer Sado reporting fire in No. 4 hold after departing Seattle, with expected arrival in Yokohama November 2.
