Record Wheat and Crop Values Hit Historic Highs Worldwide
U.S. crop statistics from the November report show total farm crop values near $5.6 billion, a half billion above last year, driven by wheat the largest production in any country and corn the most valuable crop ever grown. Corn tops $1.913 billion, wheat valued at $582.5 million, barley rye hay and other crops setting production and value records amid wartime price effects. Potato prospects declined, winter prices rose, and northern states show the shortest early stock.

Wineries Fight Tax Change While Congress Deliberates
California wine growers protest a tax change that would raise brandy used in wine making to 1.108 dollars per gallon after December 31. Attorney General Gregory declines to rule on the rate, citing hypothetical questions, while internal revenue and wartime tax provisions push toward a 1.10 dollar per gallon levy unless Congress acts. The lapse of the wartime 55 cent rate and the prior differential provision fuel industry fear of collapse.
