Women and marriage duties stir Washington opinion
A Washington crowd debates President Taft’s stance on women marrying for happiness not convenience. Speakers from Mrs. Pierce to Mrs. Moran advocate independence, love as the basis, and practical education for women to choose husbands freely.
Taft on Marriage and Women’s Free Choice in Education
President Taft advocates that women should have full, free choice in marriage, not forced by circumstances. He argues men need only offer character and education to sons, while daughters deserve substantial support to marry by choice, not necessity. Speech delivered at Columbus Miss. in 1909.
