St Andrews Choirs Through the Years One Vestment of Song
The St Andrew's Episcopal Church parish in Washington began before the civil war, briefly abandoned during the war, then revived under Rev. Harris in the 1870s. A volunteers choir formed in 1881 with organists and conductors passing through, leading to the first regularly paid vestment choir by 1888. The article traces changes in directors, soloists, and choir members through 1898, naming multiple individuals and churches connected to Washington music.

Historical record notes Harry Stratton succeeded Theophil as organist and Stainer's The Crucifixion highlighted a year of music. In 1901 a new choir under J Liste Apple formed after salary disputes, with Fulton B. Karr as organist and Mrs Alfred Gage and Mrs John Roberts as soloists. Apple, a Indiana PA native, had a lengthy musical career in Boston and Pittsburg before joining St Andrews in 1901.
