Dirt track tragedy at Hawthorne kills rider Harry Nixon
Special to The Washington Post. The Hawthorne opening day saw the death of Harry Nixon of Dayton Ohio after his motorcycle was thrown against the outer fence during a second lap of a ten mile race. Three others were injured Paul Bailey of Indianapolis with skull fractures D Iinkley of Aurora with a broken collar bone and Frank Hart of Springfield Massachusetts with cuts and bruises. Nixon died at St Anthony's Hospital after the fall sixty to seventy feet in the air according to witnesses. The crash happened as Hart trailed the leader W J Turner and bumped into Nixon and Hinkley after a skid on the second lap of the event.
