Sea Lion Escapes Zoo Follows Creek to P Street Bridge

A young male sea lion from Denver escaped the Washington Zoo Saturday night. It roamed Rock Creek to the P Street bridge all day, drawing crowds of Du Pont Circle and Massachusetts Avenue residents as keepers and volunteers chased it with nets, fish lures, and improvised gear. After a day of playful shoreward escapes and crowd-pleasing antics, the animal was finally netted, loaded into a cage, and taken toward the zoo’s enclosure amid cheers from onlookers. The sea lion, about two years old and valued at 290 dollars, arrived with a mate and faces a separate enclosure due to a temperamental elder sea lion.
