A 1907 Washington city directory narrative lists only one sober resident and no drinkers, yet many greats named Washingtonians. It catalogs numerous Johns, Samuels, and Websters, with Barons, Dukes, and a parade of Smiths and Joneses, praising the city’s literary and royal-like ranks before noting Chesapeake Beach offers a day trip.
