Divided views on Capital Traction seventeen street extension

The District Utilities Commission opens hearings at 10 in the boardroom of the District building to consider Capital Traction Company’s plan to extend street railway lines along Seventeenth Street Northwest from U to I Street and along I and H Streets Northwest with new loops. Protests and petitions fill the record, totaling 43 protests and more than a dozen favorable petitions from property owners and residents. Arguments are split: opponents fear lower property values. supporters say the line will boost values and provide transit access to thickly populated zones between Fourteenth Street and Connecticut Avenue. A large petition argues the extension benefits the community and improves access to underserved areas. The commission will also review H. C. Eddy’s investigative report on need and practicability.
