Assails Tax on Ideas at Library Association Convention
More than fifteen hundred delegates, mostly women, attended the thirty-sixth American Library Association convention opening at Continental Memorial Hall. Edwin H. Anderson of New York warned that major powers tax books to protect domestic interests, arguing the duty on foreign publications harms readers and book production in the United States. He noted Allied countries publish far more per capita, while imports remain small, and urged Washington to relocate meetings to the capital regularly. The day featured reports on labor-saving devices and plans for a Washington library exhibit, with officers to be elected Friday.
