Hughes Named as Likely Republican Nominating Hope
Chicago dispatch reports Hughes remains the favored field choice for the Republican national convention. Oregon primary results and a rising Hughes tide alarm the party old guard who fear a split if Hughes is not tamed. Roosevelt’s approaches and conservative leaders like Burton Weeks and Sherman are said to be out of contention.

In a letter dated yesterday Frank J Hogan, the returning board member George C Gertman described the board’s decision awarding the Chicago convention delegate seat to Miller Chase as contempt for the board’s certificate. He claimed the election must be canvassed behind closed doors and that ballots and evidence should be destroyed, noting a plurality of over 4,000 for Hogan over Miller-Chase. Ballot boxes were opened publicly with observers present, including The Washington Post and Washington Herald representatives.
