Presbyterian gathering in Atlantic City adopts a report describing alleged conditions as wicked and urges restraint. The resolution calls for the public to embrace simple living and aims to influence broader society, including opposition to warship expansion.
Washington comes under sharp fire from the Presbyterian General Assembly for Sabbath desecration. The report urges a return to strict Sunday observance, condemns shops theaters and saloons open on Sundays, and calls for stronger enforcement of Sunday closing laws and publication bans. The assembly also plans to consolidate church boards and curb Sunday study and travel.
The assembly debated freeing missions into one board with Rev Dr William H Black of Marshall Missouri championing consolidation. Tis Les Moulmeaux May 21 premier Monis and war minister Henri Maurice Bertheau were seriously hurt when a plane fell during the Paris Madrid race watching the start. Bertheau, long curious about aviation, had earlier toured aviation sites and balloon experiments dating back to 1905.
Des Moines May 20 A convict at the Anamosa Reformatory Joseph Howard from Howard County was pardoned by Guy Carroll after he rushed into escaping steam to shut off a boiler in the reformatorium. His act saved others and earned him clemency.
Washington drama unfolds as officers resign from the National Civil Service Improvement Association. Gordon Bell Edson Ailes Shoemaker quit amid clashes over pay talks and future of the mass Washington meeting. Buck vows to reorganize and push civil service reforms with a broadened 100 member committee while others delay or retreat, aiming to secure higher federal salaries.
Special to The Washington Post from Pittsburg on May 20 reports Mrs. Andrew W. Mellon seeking a jury trial in her husband’s counter divorce charge. The case was presented to King George and referred toward foreign office discussions with Washington. Protests mount in Pennsylvania and other states over Pennsylvania’s new jury trial repeal. Mrs Mellon says English jurists prize fair play.
Lynn Mass May 20 a 50 000 to 76 000 volt current was sent through Francis O Leary 21 a General Electric employee after he touched a 3 600 volt arc light shock. Attempts at artificial respiration and oxygen failed and a last attempt with a 0 00 volt high frequency treatment was abandoned. The procedure did not revive him though similar shocks have revived others. The story notes the victim worked in the Third B factory as an examiner and describes the hospital sequence and rise of the attempt. The report also mentions separate advertising lines from Chapple Publishing Co Boston and the serial The Guest of Honor in National Magazine.
Special to The Washington Post from Oxford May 20 describes Dr. L E Gibson testing Lewis Hanks a 27 year old man with an unprecedented parasitic condition. Hanks allegedly harbors numerous crablike creatures in his abdomen ranging from a quarter to one and a half inches with 75 to 100 legs each. Dr. Gibson claims the parasites belong to the crab family and notes dramatic relief after treatment.
Mrs Horace Wylie wife of a Washington and New York society and clubman who vanished last December with Philip Hichborn sailed today for Europe. She travels with four children Andrew Craig Katherine and Margaret. Reports indicate Wylie is in Europe and the couple have reconciled and will live abroad.
In Newburgh New York Roy H Pierce son of Standard Oil heir faced a court seeking to annul his marriage to actress Bessie Chapman Pierce. The judge heard Roy repeatedly demanded at least 25000 a year for Chapman and had attempted suicide during tensions over money. Medical and psychiatric testimony painted Roy as intoxicated and mentally unable to contract marriage, while Henry Clay Pierce described Roy's lavish lifestyle and insistence on support for Chapman.
The Delta Tau Delta Fraternity dinner honored Speaker Champ Clark with praise from Minority Leader Mann and other members of Congress. Clark urged young men in Washington to leave government offices and exercise their right to vote, while Mann countered that energetic Federal leadership is needed. The event featured cheers, endorsements, and a warm reception for Clark as both parties praised his public service and debated the path for future leaders.
In Bluefield West Virginia May 20 a mob hanged foreigner John Sorkey to a Catholic church cross after he attacked Mrs. Harry James, wife of an American miner. Bloodhounds tracked him three miles and rioters dragged him back to town. Sheriff failed to stay the mob. Sorkey confessed before the execution and pleaded for a court trial. His body was found riddled with bullets as the crowd roared through the night.
New York May 20 F Augustus Heinze the copper king faces a $5000 damages suit by chauffeur Joseph B Hubbard for injuries claimed after an altercation over a $870 taxi fare. McVeyr testified Heinze offered $440 and his card. Hubbard says Heinze refused to pay and assaulted him.
Alderman Frederick Britten urged an ordinance to hire only men as theater ushers arguing women cause panics. He claimed ten to twelve good‑looking young ushers aged 20 to 23 would provoke fear and chaotic exits during scares, prompting crowd evacuations.
Frederick Megill of Farmingdale earned local fame after a hawk snatched a chicken and flew 300 feet aloft. The bird released the chicken, which spread its wings and glided safely to the ground. The chicken then roamed the yard crowing near the flock.
A Baltimore and Ohio special train derailed at Florida Avenue and Fourth Street Northeast after heat expansion caused rails to spread. Engineer C. H. Burch sacrificed his life by throwing the emergency brakes and signaling fireman Howard Crambiett to jump, saving many passengers before the engine tipped from the tracks. Burch, a Martinsburg WV native, died at the scene. inquest planned with company investigation into the cause.
