Railway Sues Meilon Over Water Carriers Act Fees

The Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Sainte Marie Railway seeks a restraining order against Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Melion to block applying the water carriers law of 1911 to Canada crossing trains. The suit claims the $7,500 extra levy for customs inspectors is unlawful and warns of possible train stoppages at the border if enforced. The case tests federal authority and probate effects on rail operations with cross border traffic amid national interest in broader enforcement.
