Hughes Wins Senator Vote Amid Anti Gambling Drive
William C. Wallace Republican won the Forty seventh district senate seat in a May special election, defeating Henry A. McMahon Democrat by 248 votes. The race tied party lines to back Gov. Hughes anti gambling push, with Wallace expected to align with the governor in a cautious extra session. The vote turnout was light as farmers stayed home, and illness of Senator Poelker in Brooklyn tempered hopes of breaking the tie.
