Submarine Octopus Sets Diving Speed Records in Cove Trials
Newweert May 10 Records for diving by a submarine boat were broken today as the Octopus conducted trials in Coddington Cove. Under thick fog and 40 mph southwest winds the vessel submerged in four and a half minutes after a surface run, then improved by half a minute in a second test. The crew tested turning within a set area and surfacing from full underwater speed, while avoiding a collision with a tug and barges seen in lifting fog.
