W'Kims Move Killed Religion in Schools Debate

The Board of Education unanimously rejected a plan by the committees of fifteen for introducing religious and moral instruction in public schools. President Gen Boynton, homebound, proposed a nonsectarian morality text, while other members urged careful study of the issue and noted hymns used in schools are already diverse. The board emphasized welfare and argued against altering the curriculum despite protests from religious bodies.
