Indictments Against Four Railways Over Rebating Allegations
A New York grand jury indicted the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul, the Ontario and Western, the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, and the Western Transit Company on multiple counts for violations of the Elkins Act. The charges center on alleged rebates to the American Sugar Refining Company, though prosecutors withhold full details. The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad previously faced indictments and fines, and the sugar firm pleaded guilty and paid penalties. The cases, including shipments of grain and other commodities, may go to trial soon, with uncertainty over the sugar company’s role and possible arrest orders if corporations fail to appear.
