Derby winner drives late surge to victory at six furlongs
Pink Star led early but Zal closed with a wide rally in muddy conditions. In the stretch Pink Star fought to hold the lead while Minder separated from the rest, grabbing the finish by a whisker ahead of the field with a six length margin at the wire.
Pink Star Wins Derby In Slowest Time On Muddy Track
Louisville May 6 Pink Star, the longest priced horse in the field, won the 33rd Kentucky Derby by two lengths over Zal on a track nearly fetlock deep in mud. Ovelando finished third as Red Gauntlet faded to fourth amid a scratched lineup. Jockey Minder guided Pink Star from a late drive to overtake leaders with a strong stretch bid. The race halted in a time of 2 12 3 5, the slowest in Derby history, with about 30,000 in attendance including Congressman Nicholas Longworth and wife. The field was reduced to six after Arcite, Boxara, and Holdfast were withdrawn.

Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson says spring seeding is backward but time remains to grow a full crop despite unseasonable cold. He notes Canadian Northwest conditions may hurt harvest but global wheat output will absorb any regional shortfall. In the U S Southwest and Northwest, reports of damage are exaggerated as warm spells and continued plowing promise a normal to strong spring wheat crop.
